The arrival of spring brings festivities into the air. And when the festival of colors Holi is around the corner, one can’t help but think about fun with family and friends with lots of food and drinks, planning a party when you have a lot of friends and family over, it is important to start your planning and organization way in advance. So today we are going to discuss about two things which will make your Holi healthier and happier.
- The first thing is to take certain precaution while playing Holi.
Face the colours
- Don’t use soaps and scrubs to remove colours.Soaps erode the skin layers and cause rashes. It’s best to go for a soap-free cleanser.
- Using kerosene, spirit or petrol to clean your face is not healthy. Try a cream-based cleanser or baby oil instead.
- Hot water will further stick the colour on your skin. So, splash cold water.
- Apply moisturizer or baby oil after cleansing.
- Stay away from the sun till your skin has had time to recover.
- Stop beauty treatments-facial, bleach etc-a few days in advance.
- You can try out the ubtan which will remove all your colour from body and face:
Milk powder ubtan
This is a very nourishing ubtan, especially for those with dry skin.
- Milk powder
- Gram flour
- Almond powder
- Milk cream
- Lemon juice
- Rose water
Mix two tablespoons each of milk powder, gram flour and almond powder. Mix all these ingredients and add a pinch of turmeric powder in this mixture. Now, add one tablespoon each of milk cream and lemon juice in it and a few drops of rose water and olive oil. Apply this concoction all over your face and body with a gentle massage. Let the pack dry for some time and remove it by washing it off with lukewarm water.
Nail the problem
- Apply petroleum jelly before you dip your hands into that pail of colours.
- Avoid pedicures and manicures at least for a day. They can further damage the nail/cuticle.
- Don’t use nail paint remover to wipe off the colours. It dissolves the protective skin layer.
Be fair to your hair
- Chemicals in the colours make the hair roots brittle and the scalp extremely dry.
- Start using coconut oil or baby oil daily – of course you can shampoo after that-a few days before the festival.
- But don’t overdo the shampoo.

Make Ahead Tips: You can make the Thandai Masala a week ahead and refrigerate it. Have the yogurt made a couple of day ahead of time. On the day of the festival Holi, prepare both the Thandai and Chaas.

Make Ahead Tips: Cut and chop vegetables like bhindi and grate the mooli a day ahead. Boil the potatoes a day ahead. If you wish you can also make ahead the entire dish of Aloo Dum, Mooli Raita and Paneer Pulao reheat it on the festival day.
